Adaptability and flexibility are things I’m starting to value more. They are fundamental for growth and survival in a world full of uncertainties. I have been teaching this in the yoga space for a while now but the truth is, I needed to practice it in my own life and not just on the mat. So, at the age of 40 I threw myself in the deep end and managed to get a full-time job, not in yoga or music. Having managed to avoid it all my working life, this is the first real day job I have ever had, and now a month in, I’m starting to see the appeal. The pay check.
As an artist and creative I felt as if I could never be more than that, I could never transition to a mainstream job as it was my duty as an artist to live on the edge of society, at whatever cost. It comes from some entrenched idea that artists have to constantly prove to the gods they have value and staying power, that they weren’t just one hit wonders or other frowned-upon ideas for not making it Big. No wonder they end up alcoholics or cutting their ears off - or both.
But over the years, some sensible artists have made the transition - and happily go about their day being both insurance brokers and musicians and have not yet been cast out by society for being a failure. They managed to adapt and remain flexible in a changing world, I admire that.
It’s now my time to showcase my adaptability and I’m honestly proud of myself for doing so. I look forward to the point in time where my day job buys me a home with a small space I can call my Studio and a garden I can play the guitar in.
